Dream Builder: Early Prototype Release
Hello dreamers!
I'm excited (and a bit nervous) to share the very first playable prototype of Dream Builder! This is a project I'm pouring my heart into, and while it's still in its early stages, I wanted to get live as soon as possible to share my work and gather early feedbacks.
The Dream
In Dream Builder, player characters have a special power: they can materialize dreams. The goal of the game is to provide an experience where you go to adventure inside your NPCs dreams and get back with a lot of loots to build your home island and fullfill everyone's needs. I want the game to feature a unique take on crafting and storage systems, the please to scavenge during adventures to take home any valuable ressource, the joy to build a small npc + players community with a bit of relations sim.
The themes of dreams and nightmares will be at the heart of the game.
This is what I dream of.
Now here is where we are! (tip: I only have the fundations of a game engine)
What's in this prototype?
Right now, you can:
- Test the game in solo mode (though saving isn't implemented yet)
- Try multiplayer when the server is up and running
- Experience the voxel engine with texture blending between tiles and autotiling frame textures for certain blocks
The current build is very basic, but it should give you a feel for the core building mechanics and visual style I'm aiming for.
Current Controls
The controls are quite simple at this stage:
- "1/&" and "2/é" keys to switch between block types
- Mouse wheel to change your selected tool
- Right-click to move the camera
- Left-click to place blocks
- The default placement mode is "line" mode
- Hold the "Alt" key to use "pane" placement mode
What's Coming Next?
I'm currently working on a complete tool overhaul that will bring UI improvements and better key bindings.
My short-term roadmap includes those other features:
- A system to create, save, load, and place blueprints (predefined areas of blocks)
- A more robust loading system for joining and rejoining online sessions
- An evolutive save system that will allow me to persist data and migrate previous save formats as the game continues to change.
This is just the beginning of what I hope will grow into something special. The prototype is rough around the edges, but I believe in starting small and building up based on early feedbacks.
